Office Design Tips That Boost Employee Productivity by 40 per cent
A study by the Harvard Business Review: well-designed offices boost staff productivity by up to 40 per cent. Here are six easy-to-implement steps.
The physical working environment has a far more profound impact on staff motivation and productivity than is generally realised. Every detail—from the choice of colours to the lighting scheme, and from desk layout to acoustic solutions—makes a difference.
1. Prioritise Natural Light
Positioning employees within 3 metres of a window improves sleep quality by 46 per cent (Cornell University study). Arrange desks in front of windows and position screens so that there is no glare.
2. Zone-Based Design
The era of the one-size-fits-all open-plan office is coming to an end. A high-concentration work zone, a collaboration area and a relaxation corner — three distinct zones, three distinct energies. Distinguish each with different furniture and colour schemes.
3. Acoustic Control
Noise is the biggest enemy of productivity in open-plan offices. Acoustic panel partitions, high-backed chairs and the use of carpets help to prevent sound from spreading.
4. Ergonomic Standards
For every workstation: the trio of adjustable-height desks, ergonomic chairs and monitor stands. Without these three, all other design efforts remain incomplete.
5. Green Spaces
NASA research: plants improve air quality by 87 per cent in enclosed office environments. Even small potted plants measurably reduce staff stress.
6. Space to Move
Leave at least 120 cm of free space around each desk for every employee. Cramped layouts negatively affect both comfort and collaboration.
