How to Choose the Right Office Chair: 7 Key Criteria
The chair you sit in for 8 hours a day has a direct impact on your back health, productivity and concentration. Here’s what you need to know to make the right choice.
In Turkey, 67 per cent of office workers report experiencing lower back and back pain. The vast majority of these pains are caused by an unsuitable office chair.
1. Lumbar Support
Choose a chair that supports your spine’s natural S-curve. Adjustable lumbar support adapts to different body types. This feature should be your top priority.
2. Seat Height Adjustment
Your knees should be at a 90-degree angle when resting on the floor, and your feet should rest flat on the floor. Opt for models that allow for easy height adjustment using a gas lift.
3. Armrest Design
4D armrests (forward-backward, left-right, up-down and swivelling) significantly reduce shoulder and neck strain. During long working sessions, this makes a real difference to your quality of life.
4. Seat Depth
The depth of the seat should be adjustable to leave a gap of 3–5 cm between the back of your knees and the edge of the seat. This helps maintain blood circulation in your legs.
5. Backrest Tilt Adjustment
Being able to recline the backrest to an angle of between 100 and 110 degrees allows you to continue working whilst giving your lower back muscles a rest.
6. Frame and Fabric Quality
High-density foam or mesh fabrics prevent overheating and sweating during long periods of sitting. Mesh backrests provide particular comfort in hot environments.
7. Base and Castors
The aluminium five-legged base and polyurethane castors are both durable and won’t damage floors. Choose soft castors for hard floors and hard castors for carpets.
